Sim Diversity affects the variance of the lineups that SaberSim builds. Higher Sim Diversity settings mean higher variance, and lower Sim Diversity levels means lower variance.
The way that the Sim Diversity slider achieves this is based on the way that SaberSim builds lineups. We run thousands of play-by-play game simulations of every game on the slate to power all of the data that you see in the app.
When you build a lineup, SaberSim selects a sample of our simulations to use for that lineup. Whatever took place in those game sims is what the lineup is based on. We take the fantasy points played scored in those sims and use those to put together the lineup. The lineup built is the best possible lineup for those sims.
The Sim Diversity slider ultimately determines how many sims are selected for each lineup built. At high Sim Diversity settings, the number of sims is very small, and at Sim Diversity 10, it’s a single simulation. What this means is that outlier outcomes that can show up in a single sim of a game have a huge impact on the way the lineup is built.
At low Sim Diversity settings, the number of sims is larger, and at Sim Diversity 0, it’s using every simulation — that is, the lineup is being built based on the average projections you see in the app. What this means is that outlier outcomes that can show up in a single sim of a game have a much smaller impact on the way the lineup is built, because it’s drowned out by the other sims in the sample.
The Sim Diversity slider is automatically set to a default variable depending on the sport and slate size that you’re building for, and it resets to that default variable each time you open a new build. We have backtested these settings by testing out the lineups that get built at different Sim Diversity settings and calculating which ones build the highest ROI lineups.
Therefore, we recommend leaving the Sim Diversity slider alone at our optimal values. However, if you want more variance and diversity in the lineups in your pool, turn it up. And if you want less variance and diversity in the lineups in your pool, turn it down.
